Chapter Eighteen

“What are you, part Amazon or something?” Five minutes of struggling later and I still hadn’t managed to wrestle myself free from June’s hold.

She snorted. “No, but that’d be pretty cool. Maybe you shouldn’t skip arm day.”

“I throw ice spears for a living. Every day is arm day.”

“Magic ice spears.” She rolled her eyes. “They’re weightless to you.”

“Weightless-ish,” I corrected.

June stopped walking and dropped me in front of a half-crushed tree. I stepped away from it, feeling like the grey, dead wood was going to give me a splinter just from looking at it.

“You cooled down yet, Sugar?”

I crossed my arms and looked away petulantly. “I’m not the one who needed to chill out.”

“Old people are set in their ways,” she said. “Pushing Rowan is only going to make her shut down even more.”

“Like that’s possible.” I kicked at the sand. “I don’t get what her deal is. It’s like she’s become a different person since we last saw each other.”

“Things change. Maybe she has a lot on her mind.”

I glared at her.

“Yeah, that excuse never makes me feel better, either.”

“Can we go back now?” I decided I didn’t want to return halfway through that sentence. Rowan would still be awake and seeing her would worsen my mood. And if she was asleep, I’d just get pissed that she wasn’t tossing and turning about what happened.

June paced around in front of me. “Are you tired?”

“No.” My anger would have washed the fatigue away even if I had been.

“Then let’s chill out here for a bit.”

“Doing what?”

“Girl talk?” she crooned before dropping back to her normal voice. “I don’t know, Sugar. Anything to keep you guys from murdering each other. Let’s save our strength for tomorrow, hm?”

“Tomorrow,” I groaned, sitting down. “I don’t even know what’s going to happen tomorrow.”

“No psychics in your family?”

“Ha, ha, ha. I meant I have no idea how we’re going to get into that cave tomorrow. Those liches interrupted our search, and I doubt the dragon’s going to hold up on eating people until we find a way inside.”

“You want to go explore now?” she asked. “We’re halfway there.”

“I can’t tell if you’re joking.”

“I don’t really care either way. We find a path in or we don’t. We save those humans or we don’t. I already have the reason why this is happening — that’s all the Regia Mortis cares about.”

“I thought they wanted you to stop what was happening.”

“I’m sure they want it to stop. I’m also sure they don’t care if I’m the one to stop it. Aren’t you going after the guy behind all this, anyway?”

“Your passivity is scary sometimes,” I admitted.

“I’m old.”

“And set in your ways?”

“Variety is the spice of life.” She frowned. “Maybe ‘life’ isn’t the best word. Whatever. People die, Sugar. Every second of every day. I don’t let it get me down.”

“Did you ever?”

June went quiet at that. Her arms were crossed behind her back as she nudged the sand in front of her with the toe of her black boots.
